What Happens If There’s a COVID-19 Case?

Keeping everyone safe in our schools is our biggest priority, and we are following strict health and safety measures outlined by the Provincial Health Officer and the Ministry of Education.

In the case of a confirmed or alleged case of COVID-19 in a school, the school district will follow the direction of the Medical Health Officer and will provide documentation to the health authority to support contact tracing of all individuals impacted by an exposure to COVID-19.

If there is a confirmed case of COVID-19, this how and when families will be notified.

•  Interior Health will contact the affected school.
• Parents and guardians will be contacted by Interior Health if their child was exposed to the confirmed case while they were infectious. Staff who were in contact with the confirmed case will also be notified. Personal privacy rights and confidentiality will continue to be maintained for anyone with a confirmed case of COVID-19.
• People who are notified that they have been exposed to COVID-19 will be required to isolate at home for 14 days from when their last exposure happened.
• Interior health officials will work closely with the school district to determine if further actions should be taken, and the school will support student learning while they are in self-isolation.
• Based on the direction of the Medical Health Officer, it may be necessary for the school and district to communicate with the school community. SD73 and the Medical Health Officer will work together to develop a communications plan to inform the school community.
• When an exposure at a school is confirmed, this will become public information. The BC Centre for Disease Control will publish COVID-19 Public Exposures on their webpage. 
• A “school exposure notification” does not mean all students at the school have been exposed to COVID-19. If you do not receive a phone call or letter from Interior Health, your child should continue to attend school.
