Trish Smillie Named Superintendent for Kootenay Lakes

Trish Smillie, Assistant Superintendent-Elementary, has been appointed as the new Superintendent of School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) effective August 1, 2021.

“We wish Trish all the best in her new role in Nelson, BC,” said Dr. Terry Sullivan, Superintendent, Kamloops-Thompson School District. “Kootenay Lakes has made an excellent decision to have her lead their district.”

"School District 8 is lucky to have Trish," said Rhonda Kershaw, Board of Education Chair. "She has an excellent skill set and a depth of experience that will be an asset to Kootenay Lakes." 

Appointed Assistant Superintendent Jan. 1, 2020, Trish began her career with SD73 in 2015. In addition to overseeing the district’s 34 elementary schools, Trish has been responsible for the International Student Program and has served as vice-president of Global Education. Since Feb. 2020, she has led the SD73 Pandemic Response Committee.

“It has been my honour to work, and live here in the Secwepemcúl’ecw,” Smillie said. “I am proud to have been able to contribute to the success of students in SD73 and to work with so many educators and community partners who were dedicated to quality teaching and learning around the values of equity, inclusion, and diversity. “

In announcing Smillie’s departure set for July 31, 2021, Superintendent Sullivan took the opportunity to thank Assistant Superintendent Smillie for her dedicated service.

“Trish is an excellent leader, and a tremendous advocate for children,” he said. “I have appreciated her steadfast commitment to student and staff safety as she led us through the pandemic response. She will be missed by her colleagues and her friends at the school board office and by the teachers and school leaders she supported.”

Recruiting will start soon for a candidate to fulfill the role of assistant superintendent- elementary.
