ABC Family Literacy Day - January 20th, 2024
Story provided by Marianne Vande Pol, District Early Years Coordinator
Literacy is foundational to student learning and achievement. In the 2022-2027 District Strategic Plan, the Board is committed to curricular and extracurricular programming that supports students to thrive.
SD73 enjoys a strong partnership with community organizations. ABC Family Literacy Day, which took place on Saturday January 20 2024 at the Henry Grube Education Centre, showcases how that excellent collaboration kicked off Unplug and Play week in our Kamloops-Thompson region. The celebration is done annually to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. Since 1999, thousands of schools, libraries, literacy organizations and other community groups have taken part in the initiative.
This year approximately 400 children and caregivers took the time to read and play a learning activity with their child that is crucial to that child’s development. Did you know that children spend five times as much time outside the classroom as they do in school, so parents and caregivers need the tools to support their learning. By learning alongside their children, families have the potential to improve their child’s literacy skills dramatically, plus help a parent improve their skills as well.
The School District's partnership in ABC Family Literacy Day shows our commitment to ensuring the possibilities for learning are endless – and it’s fun when you do it together.
