After an extensive, nationwide search, the Kamloops-Thompson School District found its next Secretary-Treasurer close to home.

Effective August 1, Trina Cassidy, SD73’s long-time financial director will step into the role of Secretary-Treasurer/CFO as Kelvin Stretch retires.

“After an extensive search process, the Board is very pleased to welcome Ms. Cassidy to the role of Secretary-Treasurer," Rhonda Kershaw,

Board of Education Chair said during Monday's public board meeting. "Her leadership in her role of Director of Finance has been exemplary, and she will continue to be a strong asset in tackling the challenges over the coming years.”

“Trina has credibility with principals and staff across the district,” said Dr. Terry Sullivan, Superintendent, SD73. “She has helped upgrade our systems, has had strategic involvement with the Board and the leadership team, and has achieved a lot during her tenure. I am confident that Trina will continue to serve the district well as we transition out of the pandemic, prepare for increased student enrolment, and begin a new strategic planning process.”

“I am looking forward to this opportunity to work closely with the Board of Education, the incoming Superintendent of Schools, and educational leaders across the District,” said Trina Cassidy, current Director of Finance, and incoming Secretary-Treasurer. “Leading a diverse large district like ours requires strong partnerships, decisive decision-making skills, and the ability to work co-operatively, with the success, and well-being of all learners at the center of our decision making.

“Our work ahead will be challenging and extremely rewarding at the same time.”

Cassidy is a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA) and the British Columbia Association of School Business Officials. Since 2006 she has been responsible to the Secretary-Treasurer for financial reporting, budgets, payroll, and the financial and ethical stewardship of SD73. Before joining the district, she held financial positions in Kamloops at Aluminum Curtainwall Systems, Inland Glass & Aluminum, and BDO Canada LLP.

She takes over for Kelvin Stretch who announced his retirement in February after a 25-year career with SD73, 15 as the Secretary-Treasurer/CFO.

The Secretary-Treasurer has responsibility for the support operations division of the District which includes financial and corporate operations, legal affairs, purchasing, policies and procedures, support personnel, financial information management, risk management, facilities, maintenance, and transportation. In addition, the position is responsible for preparing a balanced budget for a system with nine Trustees, 2,100 staff, 15,000 plus students, 46 schools, five district facilities, and 70 bus routes, which this year was over $197 million.

This summer, SD73 will have both a new Superintendent and Secretary-Treasurer as Cassidy will join Dr. Rhonda Nixon who begins her tenure as Superintendent July 2, 2021.
