Each year, the Kamloops-Thompson School District Career Development Department partners with the Faculty of Law at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) to host a career exploration event for students interested in learning about the exciting opportunities of working in Law.

On Friday, November 15, 2024, 45 Grade 10–12 students from schools across the District participated in Discover Day: Discover the Law to learn about careers in the justice system. Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to tour the TRU Law Faculty, learn about legal concepts through a legal jeopardy game, witness an enactment of a trial, meet students and law professors, engage in a mock mediation, and were treated to a delicious pizza lunch.

After attending this Discovery Day, Sarissa Fleming, a Grade 12 student from Norkam Secondary School, shared: “This career exploration day has helped me develop a better understanding of law. I learned about different career paths and what steps to take to become a lawyer.”

TRU Law student Adam Richert helped lead the day’s activities to get students excited about potential education and careers paths in Law. “Passing on knowledge of my passions is always something that brings me joy,” Adam shared. “If I can get people as excited as I get in my passion for Law, then I feel I've made a real difference.”

Discover Days are offered by the District Career Development Department throughout the school year to support students to participate in career exploration opportunities – one of the key strategies of the Career Development priority in the 2022-2027 District Strategic Plan.

Offering career exploration events in November also supports National Career Development Month. Every year during the month of November, the District Career Development Department promotes Career programs and events, such as Take Our Kids to Work Day (November 6, 2024), Discover Days, and Girls Exploring Trades and Technology, to name a few.
