Empowering SD73 Students through Career Development

The goal of SD73s Career Development priority is to ensure every learner will graduate, know who they are, and have plans for who they aim to become through their career pathway as outlined in the District Strategic Plan 2022-2027. Recently, secondary students from across the District participated in career events through the Trades and Transitions Career Development program.

McQueen Lake Forestry and Environmental Studies Camp

Twenty-five secondary students attended the Forestry and Environmental Studies career event at McQueen Lake on October 12-14, 2023. They explored hands-on careers in ecology and silviculture, sustainable forest management, aquatics, search and rescue, forestry safety, tree planting, drones, adventure studies, grasslands, and wildfire management. Many of the students describe the event as helping them to consider options they had never thought possible and to see that a career that helps our environment is a pathway they would like to pursue.

Every career workshop was led by volunteer members sharing their careers and passions with students and some of the volunteers were once students themselves at this camp. Colby Griffith, past South Kamloops Secondary student and volunteer Camp Coordinator, describes the event as "a beneficial experience" for himself and "that it's great to share and learn with the next generation of natural resources students."

Discover Day: Community Impact and Careers In The Non-Profit Sector

Thirteen students explored several non-profit organizations to learn about careers and volunteerism on October 19, 2023.

Their day began at United Way BC and then they commenced touring on the People in Motion Bus to BGC Kamloops, Mount Paul Community Food Centre, and the Mustard Seed. Students joined in a walking tour led by the Mustard Seed to their second location on Victoria Street and the Aboriginal Friendship Society.

“I’m glad I was able to discover and learn about these wonderful organizations and how they help our community,” shared NorKam Student Julian Cruz.

“I would like to express our sincere appreciation to the community partners and volunteers for their support in providing these enriching opportunities for students,” said Rick Kienlein, Director of Instruction - Secondary Learning Services. “Through environmental exploration and insights into the non-profit sector, they are gaining valuable experiences that will shape their future career paths.”
