Grade 9 student Ashton Forsey spent Wednesday at the School Board Office and it wasn’t for bad behaviour.

The 27th annual Take Our Kids to WorkTM day took place on November 3 and Forsey, along with 250,000 other grade 9 students around the country, opted to spend his day seeing where his parent works; at the Board Office where his mom Dawn Forsey, is the executive assistant to the Secretary-Treasurer.

During his one-day tenure, Forsey was sent on various tasks including a photography assignment for the Communications Department, as well as scanning and shredding for the Finance Department.

Among the 14-year-old’s favourite parts of the day was a tour of the server room and exploring the IT Department, as that is an area he is “really interested in.”

According to Allisson Badger, District Career Education Coordinator, Take Our Kids To Work Day was a great success. “Participating students were able to go to work with a parent, relative, friend, or volunteer host,” she said. “The event gives an opportunity for parents to have career discussions with their students, and for students to have hands-on experiences that encourage them to make informed decisions about potential possible future goals.”

“I also got to go up to the bus garage, which was really cool to see,” said Forsey, a Brock Middle School student, acknowledging that the annual initiative, "...is a good program for kids to get involved in, and it can help kids figure out what they want to do when they finish school.”

While after graduation Forsey has hopes to become a math or science teacher, he now knows that there are a few other career opportunities within the school district.

A national initiative from The Learning Partnership since 1994, the one-day event encourages collaboration and participation with schools, parents, and community organizations each year.
