Discover Day: Rocky Mountaineer – March 7, 2024
Story provided by Allisson Badger, District Career Education Coordinator
In the 2022-2027 District Strategic Plan, we prioritize students’ development of their passions, interests, and their potential career pathways.
Rocky Mountaineer recently hosted a Discover Day for students to gain insights into train operations and mechanics.
Sylar Kleissen, a student from Westsyde Secondary, praised the event as an eye-opening experience that broadened perspectives. Students had the opportunity to participate in five hands-on stations, including electrical instrumentation, plumbing pipefitting, heavy-duty mechanic, refrigeration HVAC mechanic, and rail car mechanic welding.
Jakob Stobbe, a student from South Kamloops Secondary, expressed gratitude for the chance to gain practical work experience at Rocky Mountaineer. The quote of the Discover Day goes to Lacey Audet "Don't be scared to try new things"; which connects to SD73's Career Development Priority to support opportunities for students to participate in career exploration opportunities. The partnership with Rocky Mountaineer helps students to explore their sense of self and who they want to be in the world through hands-on career mentorship.
Chance Brandon, South Kamloops Secondary student shared:
“It was an amazing day and so cool to try new things and meet so many new people. It was nice to go over all of the different trades involved with the rail operations. Thank you so much to Rocky Mountaineer for letting us spend the day in your facilities.”
