SD73 Students win Four Gold Medals at the Provincial Skills Competition
Sheila Brown, District Coordinator - Trades and Transitions
The School District has identified Career Development as a priority, supporting students to attain their career and occupational objectives. On April 20th, SD73 sent 16 students to compete at the Skills BC Competition in Abbotsford, after they competed and won the Cariboo Regional Skills Competitions. Skills Canada helps young people explore the possibility of careers in skilled trades and technology sectors.
SD73 was proud to send 5 grade 12’s competing in Welding, Carpentry, Cabinetry, Culinary Arts and Electrical. There were 11 Junior Skills competitors competing in Sumo Robots and Wind Turbines, Potential Energy Carts and Gravity Vehicles. Clearwater grad 2022 student, Matthew Lavigne was also competing at the post-secondary level. Many of the young men and women representing SD73 faced challenges throughout the day. Brody Passmore (Culinary Arts), started the day with no power and water at his station. He was adaptable and resilient, earning a 4th place finish. Caden Tondelvold competed in Electrical, with a broken collarbone, and earned a Bronze.
Secondary Gold Medal winners will compete at Nationals May 24-26 in Winnipeg. Best of luck to Nolan Ilic (NorKam, Welding), Logan Jones (Barriere, Carpentry) and Matthew Lavigne (Clearwater grad 2022, Carpentry).
