SKSS Teams Win at Interior Regional Ethics Bowl

On Saturday, November 23, 2024, SKSS, Sa-Hali Secondary, Valleyview Secondary, Westsyde Secondary, and NorKam Secondary had teams participate in the Interior Regional Ethics Bowl. The regional competition was hosted and facilitated by TRU with TRU Faculty acting as the competition judges.

Congratulations to the two SKSS teams who took home first and second place – both teams will advance to the Ethics Bowl Provincials Competition in March 2025. Students on the first place SKSS team are Maeve Belomon, Yusra Rahman, Damian Hickey and Izumi Heyland. Students on the second place SKSS team are Oluwadamilare Adebowale-Adenigba, Duonye Allwell-Brown, Allison Ring, Braedyn Arbow, Delaney Rusk, and Isobel Filyk.

“It was super interesting getting perspectives from other schools that we hadn't competed against before. Last year it was just us and NorKam,” shared Yusra Rahman 

Izumi Heyland shared “It's been really cool to see how much the ethics bowl community has grown over the last few years.”

SKSS teacher sponsor, Mr. Don Wilson, shared, “As sponsor teachers of the two teams, Mr. Hallet and I are very proud of the initiative, self-organization, and hard work the teams put in to be well-prepared and ready to argue their positions on the cases. Knowing the cases in depth requires a great deal of research and preparatory argumentation. Our teams presented their cases with impressive decorum and poise. In fact, all the teams in SD73 impressed us with their capacity to develop one another's ideas with articulate civility. We're grateful to Dr. Jenna Woodrow and the faculty at TRU for organizing and developing the event.”

Ethics Bowl is a competition based on the cooperative development of ideas rather than adversarial debate. Winners are judged on the sophistication of their content, the civility of their discourse, and on their capacity to synthesize and develop ideas in response to the opposing team's critique.

Our District has a strong reputation in the Ethic Bowls – SKSS were the 2024 National Ethics Bowl Champions (read more) and NorKam Secondary were the 2023 National Ethics Bowl Champions (read more).
