Parkcrest Elementary at George Hilliard re-opened Sept. 16, and the Twin Rivers Education Centre re-opened at its new NorKam location Sept. 17, following the loss of Parkcrest Elementary School to fire Sept. 5.

“This remarkable accomplishment would not have been possible, if it had not been for the sacrifice of our Twin Rivers Education Center administration, staff and students, who saw a need and willingly moved to NorKam, the United Way building, and the former John Tod Elementary to accommodate the Parkcrest family,” said Schools Superintendent Alison Sidow. “In just 2 days, TREC staff worked tirelessly alongside our maintenance and IT staff to move to their new locations.”

Sidow said NorKam Senior Secondary welcomed TREC with open arms and she is grateful for their willingness to share their space under extraordinary circumstances.

“We are already preparing to update Happyvale for the TREC family, and our goal is to have it ready as soon as possible,” Sidow said.

TREC Principal Cory Carmichael said students are showing great resilience and rising to the occasion.

“Thanks to the outstanding commitment of our maintenance and IT staff, under the guidance of Art McDonald and Wayne Pinette, the facility was ready for 350 elementary students and its hardworking administration, teaching, and support staff in just over a week,” said Sidow. “The staff at the Henry Grube Education Center showed they really are the best in the province by pitching in and supporting teachers as they grappled with their loss, and rebuilt resources lost during the fire.”
