Superintendent’s Update

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This second week back following Spring Break has been an energetic time of longer and mostly warmer days, and many Career and Trades and Transitions events for secondary students.

Raft River Elementary School

I visited Principal Bradstock and Vice Principal Mathieu at Raft River Elementary School. They emphasized the collaborative attention to literacy and numeracy interventions that have made a positive difference to their students’ sense of accomplishment and pride in their improvements over time. Ms. Murray shared, “We have been studying arctic animals and students have represented their learning in Art and Language Arts.” Students shared their arctic animal habitats made for their clay animals. Innovation and energy for project-based learning that integrated multiple subjects is a passion in their learning community.

Career Education

Director Rick Kienlein, District Vice Principal Kerry Gairdner, and District Coordinator Allisson Badger co-presented to the Board of Education on April 11, 2022 about Career Education Curriculum for elementary students. They shared literature and lessons that supported students to explore their competencies and match them to multiple career pathways. Career literature kits have been purchased for every school to introduce students to these pathways, and a K-7 Resource Guide for teachers has been developed

The 14th annual Heavy Metal Rocks program is one of ten trades and transitions programs offered in our district. Twenty-six students and their families celebrated three-days of learning on heavy equipment and on the grounds about careers in construction, welding, and industry from experienced trades staff who volunteered their time and represented over 100 organizations that donated funds to run the event.

BC Food Guidelines

BC School Food Guidelines 2022 are changing and the draft is available here. The Ministry of Health has invited community members, especially parents, to provide feedback on these guidelines. The survey deadline is April 30, 2022.

School Calendar 2024-2025 Feedback

To support your planning for future vacations and other commitments, the School Calendar Committee has proposed the school calendar for the 2024-2025 school year. In accordance with the School Act and the School Calendar Regulations, please provide feedback on the new 2024-2025 school calendar. The deadline is May 12, 2022.

Communicable Disease Prevention Plan

We have revised our District safety measures to align with the Provincial COVID-19 Communicable Disease Guidelines for K-12 Settings, Provincial Health Officer orders, and public health guidance from BCCDC as part of the continued transition to sustainable communicable disease management. This update is effective Saturday April 16 to allow time for planning before the Easter long weekend.

Key updates include:

  • Health Awareness: an updated approach to a Daily Health Check.
  • Spaces being arranged to best meet learner needs and preferred educational approaches.
  • A focus on personal practices (e.g., health awareness, hand hygiene, personal choice for staff to wear a mask and/or face coverings, etc.).
  • Continuing to support personal space, the distance from which a person feels comfortable being next to another person.
  • For clarity, gatherings and events returned to 100% capacity as of April 8, 2022.
  • At this time, visitors accessing elementary schools will be able to enter the front doors, which will no longer be locked following Easter break. Visitors are expected to check in at the school office upon arrival.

Schools and districts are encouraged to connect with students, staff and families to share the changes. Updated information is also available on the COVID-19 safe schools web page.

Summary of safety measures that will continue in schools and district facilities:

  • Daily health awareness check (language change from Daily Health Check), which refers to staying home when sick
  • Practice hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette
  • Continued regular cleaning and disinfecting of frequently touched surfaces, including water fountain mouthpieces
  • Practice strategies to create space between individuals when gathering or working together while also adhering to preferred educational approaches
  • Sign in for visitors, but the additional information (i.e., whether you have done a daily health check) and/or contact information is no longer required by public health  
  • Wearing a mask is a personal choice, which is to be supported and respected
  • Going on field trips and avoiding locations that place additional safety measures that could cause some students not to participate
