Congratulations to SD73 Skills Canada Competitors
Sheila Brown, District Coordinator-Trades and Transitions;
In the School District 73 Strategic Plan Priorities, the Career Development team has committed to prepare students to reach their career and occupational objectives, and graduate, knowing who they are and having plans for who they aim to become through their career pathway.
Two shining examples of this work in Career Development are Nolan Ilic (NorKam Senior Secondary) and Logan Jones (Barriere Secondary). In the week of May 23rd Nolan and Logan were competing at the Skills Canada Nationals in Winnipeg, where Nolan earned a gold medal in Secondary Welding, and Logan earned a silver medal in Secondary Carpentry. Clearwater Secondary graduate Matthew Lavigne (grad 2022) also earned a Silver Medal in Post Secondary Carpentry. Nolan and Logan have worked diligently to develop knowledge and skills in their chosen trade.
Logan was a key member of the Barriere Secondary Youth Explore Skilled Trades class, where they built several sheds as they studied Carpentry, Electrical and Plumbing. Logan says that experience really helped him solidify his knowledge and gave him confidence. His peer (Austin) was quick to point out how valuable Logan’s leadership in class had been, as he was mentoring his peers. Logan reported that his favourite part of the project was seeing everyone’s finished sheds.
Nolan has participated in several Career Programs through the School District, including Youth Train in Trades (Welding Foundation) at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in grade 12, Trades Sampler at NorKam in grade 11, Youth Work in Trades, Heavy Metal Rocks, and the Trades Career Fair. Nolan has worked closely with his teachers and Trades and Transitions Coordinator since grade 10, planning his path to graduation. In grade 10, Nolan worked with his Metal teacher, Mr. Al Kotani, to design and fabricate large wall frames to display pictures of NorKam Trades students.
Matthew (Clearwater, grad 2022) also explored career opportunities and pathways offered through SD73 programs. In 2021/22, he took the Carpentry Foundation at TRU, and helped build the 2022 Y Dream Home in Tobiano.
Congratulations to all three of these students, as they continue to excel in their chosen career path.
