Kamloops Students Make Music & Memories at RockRidge Canyon Music Retreat

District News |

From May 11-14, 2026, 205 music students from secondary schools across Kamloops participated in the 2026 RockRidge Canyon Music Retreat.

This four-day music education retreat was planned and organized by six SD73 music teachers: Jaymi Daniels from Valleyview Secondary, Michelle McRae from South Kamloops Secondary School (SKSS), Jarrett Schill from Brocklehurst Secondary, Matt Fichter from Kamloops School of the Arts, Steve Weisgerber from Westsyde Secondary, and Kevin How from NorKam Secondary. 21 parents and past grads also attended as volunteers, and District Fine Arts Coordinator, Tomas Bijok, came out to support the students as well.

Throughout the retreat, teachers ran instrumental clinics, rehearsals, and showcase performances. Special workshop clinician, Chris Perry from Mount Boucherie Secondary School in West Kelowna was also brought in to work with the SD73 student ensembles for a full day.

In addition to music lessons and performances, students took part in various recreational activities including the high-ropes course, ziplining, swimming, basketball, paddleboarding, kayaking, hiking, canoeing, and campfire songs with s'mores.

Beyond developing their musical skills, students experienced a strong sense of belonging and community, building meaningful connections with peers from other schools. The retreat environment encouraged collaboration and creativity, giving students the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones, support one another, and create lasting memories through shared musical and recreational experiences.

As part of the District Strategic Plan priorities and values, the Kamloops-Thompson School District celebrates staff and students’ collective commitment to develop as musicians and to learn and perform locally, provincially, and nationally. The district is committed to supporting the Fine Arts, including music, drama, art, and digital arts that inspire many students to discover their passions.
