The Kamloops-Thompson Board of Education is pleased to announce the appointment of James Messenger as the new Assistant Superintendent of Education in the Kamloops-Thompson School District (SD73). 

“We are excited to welcome James Messenger to SD73 this fall,” shared Board Chair Heather Grieve. “James brings valuable rural experience, along with a strong reputation as a knowledgeable and collaborative leader. As a board, we look forward to working with James to create environments where all students and staff feel supported, valued, and included.”

Following a comprehensive and competitive selection process, James Messenger joins Kamloops Thompson School District’s senior leadership team from Pacific Rim School District where he currently serves as Assistant Superintendent, providing senior instructional and learning-focused leadership across the district. 

With over 21 years of experience in K-12 public education, James has supported students, families, staff, and school communities as an executive leader, Director of Instruction (Learning and Innovation), principal, vice-principal, and teacher. With experience across elementary, middle, secondary, alternate, and Indigenous Education settings, his leadership has guided district-wide efforts to strengthen coherence across schools, improve graduation outcomes, and align resources with student needs. 

“We look forward to working and learning with James to enhance and strengthen our commitment to improving kids’ life chances in all schools across the Kamloops-Thompson School District,” shared Superintendent Mike St. John. “James is known as leader and educator who cares deeply about his students, families, staff, and community. His extensive experience in district leadership, instructional practice, Indigenous-focused learning, leadership development, and system improvement will be integral to creating connected and engaging learning environments characterized by knowing, celebrating, and embracing each learner.”

In addition to his experience in public education, James has also served as a coach and in leadership roles with national, provincial, and community-based sport organizations, including KidSport, BC School Sports Legislative Assembly, Alberni Valley Minor Hockey, and Wrestling Canada.

“My family and I are excited to make Kamloops our home and become part of this community. We look forward to building relationships, getting involved, and learning more about the people and places that make this region so special,” shared James Messenger. “I am honoured to join the Kamloops-Thompson School District and continue supporting the important work taking place on behalf of students and families. James Messenger will begin his appointment as Assistant Superintendent of Education in September.
