Curricular Programming
Primary (K-3)
English Language Arts:
- Students participate in a Daily 5, Heggerty & Phonics Companion-based English Language Arts program.
Mathematics:
Students engage with mathematical concepts through math games and manipulatives to increase success with numeracy.
Intermediate (4-7)
English Language Arts:
- Students participate in a rotation system with small groups for English Language Arts. This includes a focus on reading comprehension through novels and science and social studies-based information, directed writing and free writing practice, and word work through a program titled, Words Their Way.
Mathematics:
- A similar rotation system with small groups is used for Math after warm-ups are done as a whole group. Students problem-solve each day, using the number of days they have currently been in school this school year to create fractions, decimals, percentages, tallies, equations, and Roman Numerals to represent the appropriate number for the day.
- Students spend time using whiteboards to answer open-ended questions and to practice mental math fluency skills.
- Students use a range of technology to support individual practice, including programs such as: matific.ca, prodigy.com, and whole-class skill games Math platforms, such as Kahoot & Blooket.
- Students also spend time using more traditional games for learning, like Battleship, to practice their coordinate graphing skills; chess to work on problem solving and thinking ahead strategies, and dice and card games to work on probability and math facts.
- This group also takes advantage of zoom technology and does an "author visit" at least two times per year, along with hands-on, experiential-learning, workshops for social studies like soap stone carving and live directed drawing activities.
- We look forward to visitors and presenters – such as: Traumatic Brain Injury Society, BTCEA CARE (Climate Action, Resilience, and Emotions) Workshop, and local guests who, in the past, have shared the Blanket Exercise, Memorial Day activities, and food and garden activities.
Field Trips
- We attend field trips off site to local places in Provincial Wells Gray Park and to places further away for learning opportunities.
- This year, students will visit the Big Little Science Centre & the BC Wildlife Park in Kamloops.
- We visit the Aveley Ranch each year to learn about animals.
Cultural Programs
- Students participate in many different cultural presentations annually, learning traditional worldviews, crafts and their historical relevance – such as weaving and how this craft was traded.
- Students participate in our District Day of Sucwentwécw (acknowledging Each Other) activities at Raft Elementary School annually. During this day, students across the SD73 participate in Aboriginal cultural workshops.
- Vavenby Elementary Students work with Skylar Richard from Spirit North at least once each week to engage in Indigenous and outdoor education activities.
Community Programs
- Students engage in our annual Fire Prevention Week and have an opportunity to visit the local fire station and participate in activities provided by the Vavenby Fire Department.
- Students enjoy participating in our annual Bike Rodeo with the local RCMP.
- Community connections are integral at Vavenby Elementary, and students are fortunate to have a deep-rooted sense of connection to the community and local community organizations.
