Battle of the Books is a program that is run in School District 73 every year for grades 3-7. While the first practices aren't until January, students who are thinking about trying out will want to begin reading the book selections soon to have time to read them all. Parents are encouraged to learn about the program and preview the books with their children as some may contain sensitive topics. Books selections can be viewed at bob.sd73.bc.ca where you will also find a review of each title.

In January, at our first practice, a permission form will be sent home to acknowledge interest. Teams are chosen before Spring Break by answering a 20-question test, with the top 3 scores determining the teams.

Zone and District Battles take place in April during the school day. 

So..... What is the Battle of the Books Program?

Battle of the Books is a reading motivation program adopted by many schools in SD73, most often in school libraries. The goals of the program are to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, broaden reading interests, foster connection with others, understand personal experiences, develop empathy and encourage an awareness of others.

Students who choose to participate work in grade groups with their battle hosts (Grades 3/4, Grade 5, and Grades 6/7).

Students are encouraged to begin reading the books when school begins in September. In order to begin coming to practice in January, students are encouraged to have read at least 6 of the 10 titles so that they can start to answer questions, with the objective to read all of the books.

The questions all begin with “In what book…” and the answer is always the title of one of the books.

Using selection criteria outlined in the Battle of the Books Handbook, new books are thoughtfully selected each year by a Teacher - Librarian led Selection Team. The list is carefully curated ensuring students engage with a broad range of books with literary merit, reading levels, and genres. Often these books are award winners.

All books selected have also been reviewed by either the District Novel Review Team or the provincial educational organization Focused Education Resources.
