Grade 7 Students Explore Their Future at TRU

District News |

Thompson Rivers University (TRU) opened its doors this spring to every Grade 7 student in the Kamloops-Thompson School District as part of several TRU Grade 7 Exploration Days.

TRU welcomed students from all elementary schools over a series of five visits throughout May. Designed as a zero-barrier experience, the program was supported by TRU, with professors and student leaders volunteering their time to create a meaningful, engaging introduction to post-secondary life.

From the moment SD73 buses arrived on campus, students were immersed in a day of discovery. After a warm welcome and icebreaker activity, groups set out to explore the university through a mix of campus tours and hands-on learning sessions in a variety of programs including theatre, physics, anthropology, nursing, computer science, tourism management, and more.

The goal of the experience was not to ask students what they want to be when they grow up, but rather to help them start thinking about who they want to become.

“It’s a great day to have the experience of going around TRU and you get to learn about opportunities you may not have thought of,” shared Grade 7 student Arianna Lempriere.

Throughout the day, students participated in interactive sessions led by faculty members, student advisors, and current students. In one activity focused on communication and problem-solving, students worked in teams to give and follow instructions, first with limited detail, and then with greater precision. The results were immediate and eye-opening. Students reflected on how clearer communication led to stronger outcomes, reinforcing the importance of collaboration, critical thinking, and perseverance—skills that will serve them well in both school and life.

Between sessions, TRU student leaders guided groups across campus, helping students feel comfortable in a university setting while highlighting the wide range of programs available. From law and sciences to tourism and trades, students began to see the many pathways their futures could take.

“I got to explore more and learn about more opportunities. It’s great to learn about what I can do when I’m older and what to study,” said Brianne Frudd.

A key focus of the Grade 7 Days is early exposure. As students prepare to transition to secondary school, the experience helps them begin thinking about course selection, future goals, and the possibilities that lie ahead. By visiting a university campus at a young age, students can start to see themselves as future post-secondary learners.

“I’m beyond grateful to be breaking the post-secondary education barrier by bringing these Grade 7s onto TRU’s campus and investing in their future and our community,” shared one TRU leader.

The Grade 7 TRU visits days were filled with energy, curiosity, excitement, and for many students, a new sense of possibility.

In the 2022-2027 District Strategic Plan, the district is committed to supporting students in achieving their career, continuing education, and life goals as part of the Career Development Priority. Events like the Grade 7 visits to TRU help students expand their horizons, increase their aspirations, and begin to imagine a future that includes post-secondary education.
