Celebrating the 2026 Owl Award Recipient, Ashley Lowndes

Awards & Achievement, Board of Education |

On Monday, June 22, 2026, the Kamloops-Thompson Board of Education awarded this year’s Owl Award for Excellence in Public Education to educator, coach, and local volleyball community builder, Ashley Lowndes

The OWL Award for Excellence in Public Education has been a Board of Education Award since 2016. This award was developed to recognize and honour individuals, groups, and organizations who have enriched and advanced public education through their significant, system-wide, and outstanding accumulative contributions in Kamloops-Thompson School District over five years or more. Past winners can be explored here

Ashley Lowndes is a Physical Education, English, and Social Studies teacher, and the Athletic Director at Brocklehurst Secondary School. She is also a respected volleyball coach, official, and leader within the Kamloops Volleyball Association (KVA), a graduate of the district’s Leadership Development Program, and a valued leader in the Brock school community.

During the Owl Award presentation Board Chair Heather Grieve shared, “Under Ashley’s guidance, youth in our district have not only developed their skills, they have built confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging. She emphasizes not only technical development, but also core values such as discipline, respect, teamwork, and perseverance — qualities that extend far beyond sport and school and into everyday life. One of the most powerful impacts Ashley has had is on the self-confidence of the youth she mentors. Many now say they want to “be like Ashley” when they are coaching or supporting others. Ashley, your dedication, leadership, and genuine care for others have made a lasting difference across our district and community.”

After receiving her award, Ashely took time to acknowledge all the educators who make a positive impact on student across the district, sharing, “I am one of hundreds within our school district that to the exact same thing, whether it be drama or art or band. I am one of many, but I am incredibly honoured to be this year’s recipient.”

Ashley is a mentor and confidant, a champion for students, and a trusted presence who is committed to fostering safe, caring, and healthy learning environments while cultivating meaningful relationships with students, staff, and community.

Congratulations to 2026 Owl Award winner Ashley Lowndes! The Kamloops-Thompson Board of Education and School District are grateful for all the ways you have supported and uplifted students, athletes, staff, and families in the classroom and on volleyball court.
